Formatting

General

  • Any images, tables, or other elements within your page must not be wider than 150 pixels for PalmOS creative, 215 pixels for PocketPC creative, or 300 pixels for PalmOS high res creative.
  • Be sure to preview your design in the web browser of your choice. Scale the window down to approximate the screen of a device. Keep in mind that the fonts on a device take up proportionately less space than the fonts in your browser. You may also want to keep in mind that the default font on a device will be sans serif.

Previewing your ad

Of course, previewing the creative in a web browser helps you visualize your ad and trap possible problems or mistakes, but you probably prefer to see how your ad looks on an actual device. There are a couple of means for accomplishing this (both require an AvantGo user account):

Create a personal channel

  • Upload your creative to a web server. Take note of the URL where your content is now hosted.
  • Go to http://avantgo.com and use the "Create a Personal Channel" or "Channel Wizard" and follow instructions for downloading to your mobile device.
  • The next time you synchronize your device(s) the pages will be loaded on your device and a link will appear on your AvantGo Home page as a channel.

Preview your creative on an emulator

  • These steps are for the more technically inclined...
  • Create a personal channel (see above).
  • Go to http://www.palmos.com/dev/tools/emulator to download and install an emulator onto your hard drive; or ask an AvantGo salseperson to send you one.
  • Locate avantgo.prc, libmal.prc, and MobileLink.prc on your hard drive (if you're a PalmOS AvantGo user, you already have these files installed under a folder named AvantGo in the Program Files folder on your main hard drive; otherwise you'll have to download them).
  • Drag and drop the 3 .prc files onto an open emulator and launch AvantGo on it.
  • Use the emulator's "menu button" to see the menus for AvantGo and select the Options menu.
  • Select Server Preferences
  • Click on Settings... and enter sync.avantgo.com for Server Addr, 80 for Port, and enter your username and password. Tap on OK. Tap OK again.
  • Select Modem Sync from the Channels menu.
  • Your creative will appear listed as a channel.

Fonts and styles

  • Bolding is supported.
  • Style sheets, background colors and images, and font sizes, colors, and faces will not show up on most PalmOS devices, but they are, to a limited extent, supported on PocketPC-based devices and Palm OS 5 (high-res) devices. If you choose to use any of these features, make sure your creative looks acceptable even without them.
  • Headings and italics will show up as expected on PocketPC devices, but will be rendered as bold type on Palm devices.

Device considerations

  • Older Palm devices display up to 13 lines of text with a width of about 38 characters across. A paragraph break is the vertical equivalent of one empty line on a Palm device.
  • PocketPC devices can be set by their users to a baseline font of five different sizes. Almost all users will have their font set to "medium" or "smaller". For "medium" the screen displays, including spaces, about 19 lines of text with a width of about 34 characters per line. For "smaller" the screen fits 21 lines of text at about 47 characters across. A paragraph break is the vertical equivalent of one empty line that is about a third of the height of a regular line on a PocketPC device.
  • For both devices, if your page does not produce a vertical scroll bar, you gain a nominal amount of horizontal space. Horizontal scroll bars should be avoided at all costs; the most common cause of horizontal scroll bars is a too-large graphic.
